Designing the lighting for Santiago Calatrava’s iconic building meant embracing a challenge worthy of its architecture: creating light capable of revealing transparency, movement, and geometry while expressing the spirit of a museum dedicated to innovation and reflection. We designed the building’s illuminated vertical planes, the soft indirect lighting that flows throughout the interior, and the linear skylight openings that accentuate the sweeping curvature of the roof, naturally guiding visitors’ gaze toward the sky.
The project received the Edwin F. Guth Award of Excellence from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and contributed to the Museum of Tomorrow becoming, in 2016, the first museum in Brazil to achieve LEED Gold Certification. More than a decade later, it is deeply rewarding to see the museum established as both a symbol of the revitalization of downtown Rio de Janeiro and the most visited museum in South America.
