At 1,350 sqm with capacity for 295 people within the monumental scale of an international terminal, the Star Alliance VIP Lounge at Guarulhos faced one challenge: making travelers forget they’re in an airport. LD Studio responded with a strategy of creating human scales within an overwhelming architectural scale. Sixteen-foot-diameter circular fixtures on cold-cathode poles created a sense of lower ceiling height in the social areas; table lamps with concrete bases and fabric diffusers defined the scale for reading and work areas; custom pendant lights shaped like conical hats lit the dining area without competing for space with the ceiling’s rope installations. Every layer of light was designed to welcome, create intimacy, and reinforce the Brazilian identity the client wanted, without resorting to obvious luxury.
